Non-Coaching Staff Positions
Who are they?: Non-coaching staff members are any institutional staff members involved
What can they do?: Noncoaching staff members, as well as coaches who do not count
What can’t they do?: Non-coaching staff members may not engage in any on-or off fi eld
Exceptions: Non-coaching staff members with sport-specifi c responsibilities, such as
Rules Working Group: RWG 2013-6 suspended the adoption of RWG 11-2 pending
in noncoaching activities and do not count in the institutions coaching limitations.
Examples of non-coaching staff members include the director of operations, director of
player development, administrative assistants, academic counselors, tutors, etc.
What can they do?: Noncoaching staff members, as well as coaches who do not count
toward the numerical limitations on head and assistant coaches may make telephone calls
to prospective student athletes, their parents, legal guardians, and coaches after the calendar
day on which the institution receives a signed National Letter of Intent or a fi nancial
deposit it response to the institutions offer of admission.
Noncoaching staff members may also initiate telephone calls to prospective student athletes
or those individuals accompanying them during their offi cial visit transportation, as well
as during the offi cial visit itself. Noncoaching staff members may also initiate telephone
calls to prospective student athletes, their parents, legal guardians, relatives, or coaches that
relate solely to institutional camp or clinic logistical issues (such as missing registration
information), so long as no recruiting conversation or solicitation of particular individuals
to attend a camp or clinic occurs during such calls.
What can’t they do?: Non-coaching staff members may not engage in any on-or off fi eld
coaching activities such as attending coaching meetings and analyzing fi lm for athletes, nor
may they be involved in any kind of off-campus recruitment of prospective student-athletes
or scouting opponents.
Exceptions: Non-coaching staff members with sport-specifi c responsibilities, such as
director of operations and administrative assistants, may participate in organized activities
(such as attending meetings) involving only the coaching staff and may perform administrative
duties. However, these staff members are prohibited from participating in instructional
activities with student-athletes, any on-court or on-fi eld activities, and are prohibited
from participating with or observing student-athletes in the staff member’s sport who are
engaged in non-organized voluntary athletically related activities.
Rules Working Group: RWG 2013-6 suspended the adoption of RWG 11-2 pending
additional study and appropriate modifi cations. Under the new proposal, noncoaching staff
members may make telephone calls to prospective student athletes, their parents, legal
guardians, or coaching starting on the calendar day on which the NLI or any other form of
written commitment is signed. Noncoaching staff may also initiate phone calls to a prospective
student-athlete during their offi cial visit transportation as well as during the visit
itself.
