Out of Bounds - Secondary Infraction
What Happened?: During the fall semester, institution provided
a fi rst-year nonrecruited student-athlete with impermissible
vacation period expenses valued at $180. Specifi cally, school
dorms were closed during Thanksgiving break, but the student
was required to practice with the team on campus.
The student-athletes parents lived in locale of the institution, and
because the student-athlete stayed with them during the break, he
should not have received any vacation period expenses.
Team coaches authorized the student-athlete to receive
Thanksgiving break vacation period expenses, and the compliance
coordinator mistakenly approved the authorization. The
student-athlete received enough money to cover six days of
meals. The violation was discovered when the coaching staff
called the compliance offi ce to discuss semester break vacation
expenses after receiving a rules reminder about permissible expenses
during this period.
Institutional Action: The student-athlete repaid the value of
the benefi t ($180) to charity. Institution now also compiles lists
of student-athletes who live at home at the beginning of each
academic year and cross-check it with all requests for vacation
period room and board expenses to ensure those student-athletes
do not receive such expenses.
