Syracuse's run in the Temple Challenge Cup came to an end on Friday at the Henley Royal Regatta, as Washington edged the Orange by three-quarters of a length on the historic 2,112-meter Henley course on the River Thames.
Syracuse advanced to the quarterfinals following a second-round victory over Oxford Brookes University 'E,' but could not get past the Huskies in a tightly contested battle down the Thames.
Friday's result brings the curtain down on the collegiate rowing careers of five Orange student-athletes: coxswain Sam Fernandez, stroke seat Alex Dawallu, 5-seat Mack Carr, 4-seat Luke Dunleavy and 3-seat Andrew Furlow.
The trip to Henley capped a standout season for Syracuse rowing, which saw the Orange sweep Cornell and Navy to retain the Goes Trophy, the 2V8 earn bronze at the EARCÂ Eastern Sprints and fourth at the IRA Championship, while four oarsmen named IRCA All-America honors.
The five graduating seniors in the Henley eight are part of a senior class leave behind a program that reached the IRA National Championship arc and represented the Orange on the international stage at one of rowing's most prestigious regattas.
