The Syracuse men's rowing team opened its Henley Royal Regatta campaign with a victory Wednesday, defeating D.S.R.V. Laga 'B' by 2 and 3/4 lengths in the first round of the Temple Challenge Cup on the historic 2,112-meter course on the River Thames.
"We had a good start to racing today," said associate head coach Connor Walters. "I think while the guys were a little nervous, they were also confident in their speed. They did a good job in the early phases of the race with a few bits where we can improve. Now it's about resting up and getting ready for the next one."Â
The Orange advance to the next round of the prestigious regatta, one of the oldest and most storied rowing events in the world, dating back to 1839.
Syracuse jumped out to an early lead and was able to comfortably hold position as they rowed past the Steward's Enclosure securing their spot in the second round on Thursday. The Orange will face off against Oxford Brookes University 'E', who defeated A.L.S.R. Asopos de Vliet from The Netherlands by one length on Wednesday. A time for Thursdays race will be determined after the completion of all Wednesday races.Â
