On Saturday, Oct. 3, the Syracuse University rowing programs joined the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association (SARA) to celebrate the 14th annual Evening at Ten Eyck. The event was held at Drumlins Country Club, honoring the following inductees into the SARA Hall of Fame: the 2001 Women's Varsity Eight, Dan O'Shaughnessy (2006), Chip Chase (1983), and Hubert "Jock" Stratton (1926).
The 2001 Women's Varsity Eight was honored as the only Syracuse women's boat to ever reach the NCAA Championship Grand Finals. The celebrated crew included Heather DiLoreto VanZandt (2002), Jillian Carlson (2002), Kate Modolo (2001), Alicea Kochis Strodel (2002), Libby Graves (2002), Rachael Kirchhoff Posey (2002), Helen Tanger (2001), Froukje Wegman (2002), and Meredith Kyle (2001). That same season, they rowed through 21 teams, putting together an undefeated regular season and winning the Big East Rowing Challenge title.
O'Shaughnessy was a team captain during his time at Syracuse, sitting in nearly every seat in the Varsity Eight during his tenure. In his senior season, he played a crucial part in the Varsity's undefeated dual season and an 8th place finish. Following his time at Syracuse, O'Shaughnessy rowed at Cambridge University, where he was named Club President and sat 2 seat in the historic Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race, helping his crew win the 2007 dual.
Chase stroked the Second Frosh and was a consistent member of the Second Varsity Eight while at Syracuse. He then went on to have a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Navy Supply Corps. Chase credits his time with his crew with guiding him through several assignments, stating, "What I learned on Onondaga during those long practices was the importance of every person, and those lessons carried me to each assignment. I was only as good as those around me."
Finally, the SARA Hall of Fame inducted Hubert "Jock" Stratton. Stratton was a pioneer in the development of Syracuse's rowing programs. His time in the boat included the 1923 IRA JV Championship and a stint as Varsity Stroke in 1926. After graduating from Syracuse, he remained involved with the team, serving as SARA President from 1966 to 1969. He is the former Director and Treasurer of the Syracuse Regatta Association as well as a former member of the Syracuse University Rowing Historical Society. Stratton is the namesake of the primary Crew Room at Archbold, used by generations of Syracuse rowers, past and present. Although Stratton passed away in 1978, his legacy remains a part of the Syracuse community.
The Evening at Ten Eyck was part of a weekend of events that included a Meet and Greet at the historic Ten Eyck Boathouse on Friday evening, followed by an alumni row the next morning. Prior to the evening dinner, alums and supporters were invited to participate in the alumni golf tournament at the same Drumlins Country Club that hosted the weekend's main event, Celebrating Orange Rowing: Dinner and Hall of Fame.
