Five Selected to Inside Lacrosse All-America

BALTIMORE – Five Syracuse University men's lacrosse standouts earned recognition as Inside Lacrosse announced its annual Media All-America lists Saturday afternoon.
Joey Spallina was named First Team Media All-America with Riley Figueiras earned Second Team plaudits. Luke Rhoa was voted Third Team with Michael Leo and Billy Dwan III picked up Honorable Mention.
Seventh-ranked Syracuse opens NCAA Tournament play Sunday evening with a clash against No. 12 Yale. Opening faceoff is set for 5 p.m. on ESPNU with Anish Shroff and Quint Kessenich on the call. Tickets are available at Cuse.com/tickets.
Spallina, a Tewaaraton Finalist and ACC Offensive Player of the Year, has 30 goals and 45 assists this season to lead Syracuse with 75 points. Spallina, the program's all-time points leader, paces the ACC in assists per game (2.81) which ranks third in Division I. He also leads the conference in points per game (4.69) which is a top-10 mark this season across the country. Spallina was selected third overall in the PLL College Draft in April, going to the Maryland Whipsnakes.
One of the top cover defensemen in the country, Figueiras has quietly caused 25 turnovers this season, which ranks second in the ACC with a 1.56 per game mark. Also one of the best poles off the ground, Figueiras averages 3.56 ground balls per game, a top-10 mark for defensemen in the country.
One of the top shooting midfielders in Division I this year, Rhoa has canned 26 goals and issued nine assists for 35 points, tops among Syracuse's full-time midfielders. With two game-winning goals to his credit, Rhoa has also added a team-best eight man-up goals which leads the ACC and is tied for the third-most in Division I, one shy of the two leaders (9). Rhoa was picked 16th overall, going in the second round to the New York Atlas.
A versatile offensive player, Leo has played at both attack and midfield this year, scoring a team second-best 31 goals with 22 assists, also second most on the team. He is fifth in the ACC with a 1.38 assists per game ratio and 11th in goals per game (1.94) in the league. Combined he ranks sixth with 3.31 points per game in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Leo was picked sixth overall in the PLL Draft by the California Redwoods.
Another close defenseman, Dwan has a team second-best 13 caused turnovers. Never afraid to carry the ball, Dwan has seven goals to his credit this season and 19 in his career, the most goals by a defenseman in program history. This season he has 26 ground balls as well, fourth most on the team and second most among its defensemen. Dwan was announced midway through the second round of the PLL Draft, joining Spallina on the Maryland Whipsnakes.
