No. 6 Orange Take Down No. 7 Duke

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A goal in the 11th minute stood up as No. 6 Syracuse University field hockey knocked off No. 7 Duke University 1-0 Friday night at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
Prior to the game, the program recognized members of its 2015 NCAA Division I National Championship team, while at half time, Alyssa Manley's jersey was officially retired and is installed permanently at J.S. Coyne Stadium next to Julie Williamson's jersey.
The Orange (7-2, 1-2 ACC) got the lone goal of the game from Bo van Kempen in the 11th minute on one of the eight combined corners in the contest. Pati Strunk and Liz Stange contributed assists. Jesse Eiselin got the win for Syracuse, splitting time with Tane King. Each keeper made one save while Grace O'Connor added a defensive save.
Duke (5-3, 2-1 ACC) was held to just six total shots, only three of which were on goal. The Blue Devils had just four penalty corners, two of which came in the first quarter. Kaiya Chepow made five saves for the visitors in her 56 minutes of work.

How it Happened
- The Blue Devils picked up the first corner of the game in the seventh minute but the ball came out of control and led to a no-shot corner.
- In the ninth minute Duke's Alaina McVeigh took a shot but was thwarted by O'Connor on the goal line.
- Midway through the 11th minute, Syracuse earned its first penalty corner of the game. Strunk zipped in the insert to Stange for the trap to set up a van Kempen drag flick for the only score of the evening.
- Syracuse got its second corner of the next in the 18th minute, leading to a Danique Schuurman shot that was stopped by Chepow. Lotti Knights got a second-chance opportunity that was also saved by Chepow.
- Duke got a chance on a corner in the 21st minute but Eiselin was equal to the task to preserve the 1-0 lead into halftime.
- Stange had two quick shots on the doorstep in the 35th minute but Chepow made a pad and a blocker save.
- The final Blue Devil penalty corner of the night came in the 40th minute. Brynn Crouse got the shot off but the chance went wide of the goal to keep it 1-0 through 45 minutes.
- King made her save in the 48th minute on a Madison Beach attempt, securing the fourth combined shutout of the season for Syracuse.
- The Orange press weathered a heavy storm in the final minutes as Syracuse took a green card in the 58th minute while Duke's goalie was pulled, pitting the nine 'Cuse players against 11 for the Blue Devils.
- It's another quick turn around for the Orange as Syracuse hosts No. 20 Penn State on Sunday with a noon start.
- The Nittany Lions will be the seventh ranked foe the Orange face in the last eight games while Syracuse sports a 4-2 record against top 20 teams this season.
- Sunday's showdown will stream on ACC Network Extra.
