How it Happened
- Syracuse struck first late in the first quarter as Trey Deere canned an around-the-world shot on the run, catching a pass from Spallina. Maryland tied the game 90 seconds later on a goal from Elijah Stobaugh on a Jack Dowd feed.
- Two minutes later Syracuse got a jab step back shot from Luke Rhoa from 15 yards out for a 2-1 Syracuse lead with 72 seconds left in the quarter. Maryland tied the game for a second time at 2-2 on a Matthew Keegan goal with five seconds left in the quarter.
- Maryland scored the opening goal of the second quarter from AJ Larkin, marking the first time all season the Orange trailed at any point in a game.
- The lead was short lived as Finn Thomson deposited a goal from the doorstep on a Sam English dish with 10:35 to go in the second period.
- Maryland took the lead again at the midway point of the frame from Braden Erksa from Spanos, putting the Terps up 4-3.
- Spallina took control late in the first half, scoring twice on similar goals. Out of a timeout, Spallina dodged from the end line, using an English screen to get past his defender for the tying goal at 4-4. With 28 seconds left in the half, Spallina made a similar move from the far alley to put the Orange up 5-4 at the break.
- The hosts scored first in the second half, capitalizing on a Syracuse tripping penalty on an Eliot Dubick goal. McCool made the initial save but Dubick controlled the rebound and scored.
- Maryland scored three straight over a five-minute span from Daniel Kelly and Spanos twice.
- Syracuse broke the run with 17 seconds left in the third on an Owen Hiltz strike. Syracuse trailed 8-6 heading to the final frame.
- Maryland scored three of the final four goals to put the game out of reach for the Orange. Ford scored twice while Kelly scored in between. Hiltz had the final Syracuse goal of the game with 6:34 to play.
- Syracuse out-shot the Terps 41-32, allowing Maryland double-digit shots in just one quarter, the decisive third.
- Both teams valued possession - Syracuse had just 13 turnovers while Maryland had a dozen. Each team misfired on just one clear attempt each.
- John Mullen was an even 11-of-22 at the faceoff X, picking up four ground balls along the way.
- McCool made another dozen saves, keeping the Orange within reach with seven second-half saves.
- The Orange return home next weekend for another top-20 showdown, taking on No. 19 Harvard Saturday at the JMA Wireless Dome. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
