"I'm excited about the opportunity to go against UNC this week," Syracuse head coach Fran Brown said. "Coach Belichick and his staff, see them just doing a pretty good job. I know you guys all just judge everybody off the records and things of that nature, but for me, watching them and just seeing how week to week his football team's getting better and how he's doing a good job. You can see him starting to implement the old Belichick brand of football in how they're playing and how they fly around together. It's a great opportunity to get to play here at home, Halloween night. It's gonna be a good atmosphere."
Syracuse enters Friday's game with a 3-5 overall record and a 1-4 mark in ACC play. The Orange are coming off a loss at No. 7 Georgia Tech where the offense gained 263 of its 381 yards of total offense in the second half. Syracuse had 157 yards rushing against the Yellow Jackets, which is its second-highest total of the season.
The Tar Heels are 2-5 overall and are looking for their first league win of the season after a 17-16 overtime loss to Virginia dropped their ACC record to 0-3. North Carolina ranks eighth in the ACC in total defense, allowing 345.6 yards per game. The Tar Heels have been particularly effective against the run, giving up just 110.6 yards on the ground per game.
Friday's game will mark the 21st time the Orange have played on Halloween in program history. Pittsburgh has been Syracuse's most common opponent on Oct. 31 with the Orange taking on the Panthers six times on Halloween. Syracuse is 15-5 all-time on Oct. 31, which includes an eight-straight wins from 1953-1998.
