SU volleyball heads to Chicago for its first road tournament, the Windy City Invite
On Thursday, September 4, the Syracuse volleyball team will embark on its first road trip of the 2014 season. The 2-1 Orange will venture to Chicago, Ill., for the Windy City Invite hosted by Chicago State. 'Cuse will also take on DePaul and Illinois – Chicago in the two-day tournament.
DePaul is the only team scheduled for Friday with the match set for 6:00 PM. Depaul is currently 1-2 on the season with a win against Bradley and losses to Stony Brook and Hampton. Saturday, the team will take on the Illinois-Chicago at 11 AM and Chicago State at 8 PM. UIC is seeking its first win after suffering losses to Virginia, Marshall and Eastern Michigan last weekend. The host, Chicago State, won its season opener against North Carolina A&T but is currently on a three game skid with losses against Akron, Indiana State and Wright State.
Syracuse is coming off its opening weekend in which it picked up wins over Delaware State and Niagara but fell short in a close game to Temple that was decided by a 15-13 score in the fifth set. Temple went on to win the Big Orange Tournament with a 3-0 record.
In the team's first three contests fans witnessed a new Orange team with familiar faces. Silvi Uattara showed why she was selected to the 2014 Preseason All-ACC Team with her 43 kills over the course of the tournament. Uattara was awarded for her efforts by being named to the All-Tournament Team along with Monika Salkute who had 32 kills of her own on the weekend.
The two veteran hitters were set up by the team's new setter, Gosia Wlaszczuk. The junior is a converted outside hitter and has developed quickly in her new role. Wlaszczuk recorded 83 assists and 14 kills in three games, and as well as she played in her first tests as a setter, her coaches and teammates feel she will only get better.
Moving into second all-time in SU history for block assists was Lindsay McCabe. The redshirt senior appeared in midseason form as she reigned in 20 kills and denied 18. Salkute also found success denying the opposing attack with 12 blocks but the three were also joined by freshman Leah Levert who earned herself two starts and recorded 12 blocks of her own. Dana Crispi was another freshman who saw a great deal of playing time in her first tournament as part of the Orange. She stepped up as well, finishing with four service aces, seven assists and 17 digs as a defensive specialist.
