After a victory over Delaware State and a tough five-set loss to Temple on Saturday the Orange bounced back on Sunday to defeat the Niagara Purple Eagles, 3-1. The Orange finished second in the Big Orange Tournament behind Temple who finished the weekend undefeated.
Silvi Uattara and Monika Salkute were named to the All-Tournament team along with Kirsten Overton and Caroline Grattan of Temple, Alliyah McBean of Delaware State and Amanda Sedore of Niagara. Overton was named MVP of the tournament.
Salkute and Uattara led the way for 'Cuse in kills. Salkute recorded 12 kills and 6 digs while Uattara had 11 kills and 12 digs in the contest. In the three games this weekend Salkute put away 32 kills and Uattara converted 43 of her attacks.
Lindsay McCabe continued her siege on the SU record book. McCabe dominated the net with eight blocks against Niagara and 18 on the weekend. She now owns the second most block assists with 399 and is just 13 total blocks away from the third most in SU history. McCabe added five kills and two assists to her line today as well.
At setter, Gosia Wlaszczuk impressed in her first weekend of competition at the position. The junior out of Bialystok, Poland showed off her deceptively efficient style of play. She tallied 27 assists in the match against Niagara to go along with her four kills and 15 digs. Altogether, Wlaszczuk finished the tournament with 83 assists and 14 kills.
Coach Yelin awarded three freshmen with significant roles this weekend as well. Dana Crispi, Lucie Guttakovskaia and Leah Levert all received ample playing time in all three contests. Levert started in two matches and did not disappoint with her 12 blocks over the course of the weekend, seven of which came against Niagara. Crispi finished Sunday with six digs but had four service aces on Saturday. Guttakovskaia spelled Wlaszczuk sparingly but made an impact when she was in the game. Through the weekend she assisted on 12 kills.
On Friday September 5 SU heads to Chicago for the Chicago State Tournament to take on DePaul at 6 PM. Saturday The Orange go head-to-head with Illinois-Chicago at 11 AM and Chicago State at 8 PM.
