SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's soccer team (2-0-0) looks to continue its undefeated start when it hits the road for its inaugural ACC match Friday, Sept. 6 at Virginia Tech (1-1-0). SU and the Hokies kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Thompson Field in Blacksburg.
Â
The game represents Syracuse's first ever ACC contest in any sport. SU officially joined the conference on July 1, 2013.
Â
SO FAR, SO GOOD
The Orange seeks to improve to 3-0-0 for the first time since 2006 with a victory Friday. SU defeated Colgate (4-0) and Hartwick (2-0) to start the season. It's the second consecutive year the Orange has posted back-to-back shutouts to open the season. In 2012, Syracuse defeated (2-0) and Binghamton (1-0) to start the campaign.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Orange defeated Hartwick, 2-0, in its home opener on Sept. 2. Nick Perea and Grant Chong scored in the second half to lead the Orange to victory. The SU defense limited the Hawks to two shots (none on goal) and goalie Alex Bono earned his 12th career shutout.
Â
SCOUTING THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech is 1-1-0 on the 2013 campaign, beating Binghamton (1-0) and losing to Fordham (2-1) at the James Madison Tournament last weekend.
Â
Alessandro Mion and Daniel Lauretano have Virginia Tech's two goals this season. Mion's tally in the eighth minute was the game-winner in the season opener against Binghamton. VT goalie Kyle Renfro has played all 180 minutes, grabbing five saves and allowing two goals.
Â
Mike Brizendine is in his fourth year as head coach of the Hokies. He owns a 28-48-8 career coaching record and led Virginia Tech to seven wins last year, its most since 2007.
Â
SERIES HISTORY
Virginia Tech has won all three meetings against Syracuse. The matches occurred from 2001-03 when both programs were members of the BIG EAST Conference.
Â
The only previous meeting in Blacksburg was a thriller. Bobby O'Brien scored unassisted in the 89th minute to break a scoreless tie and give the Hokies a 1-0 victory in 2002.
Â
VT has outscored Syracuse in the series, 8-1. The Orange's only goal in the series was scored by Frank Bruno on a penalty kick in the 2003 pairing. Bruno's PK trimmed the VT lead to 2-1. The Hokies scored three goals in the last 10 minutes of the game to win, 5-1.
Â
UP NEXT
The Orange returns home on Monday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. for an intra-state battle against Manhattan. The game will be televised live in Central New York on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
