SU Meets Georgetown in Preseason Finale

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In a rematch of a thrilling NCAA Tournament third-round match from a year ago, the 20th-ranked Syracuse University men's soccer team travels to No. 3 Georgetown on Sunday, Aug. 25. The Orange battles the Hoyas at 3:30 p.m. at Shaw Field in its final exhibition game of 2013.
LAST TIME OUT
Syracuse improved to 2-0 this preseason with a 6-1 exhibition victory against Toronto's Ryerson University on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Six different players scored for the Orange. High school-turned-college teammates Alex Halis and Chris Nanco led SU with one goal and one assist apiece.
REMATCH IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL
Syracuse and Georgetown last competed on the pitch on Nov. 25, 2012 in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The Orange held a 1-0 advantage for the majority of the match until the Hoyas scored a late goal and ultimately advanced on penalty kicks. Goalkeeper Alex Bono equaled his career high with eight saves to keep the Hoyas in check until the 85th minute when Brandon Allen tied the game. Georgetown eventually reached the NCAA championship match before losing to Indiana.
STAMOULACATOS CONSISTENT
Sophomore Stefanos Stamoulacatos has scored in each of SU's first two preseason games. Stamoulacatos' tallies put the Orange on the board against both Fordham and Ryerson, setting the tone for the Orange offense which has notched eight goals through two exhibition contests.
ROOKIE CONTRIBUTIONS
Three Syracuse freshmen have registered points this preseason. Halis and Nanco both have one goal and one assist apiece, while classmate Emil Ekblom has two assists.
SCOUTING THE HOYAS
Georgetown is ranked third in the NSCAA preseason poll. The Hoyas are the favorite to win the BIG EAST after a 19-4-3 season in 2012. They return 16 letterwinners and seven starters from 2012. Allen was picked as national freshman of the year by several media outlets after leading the team with 34 points, including 16 goals, last year. Georgetown also brings back senior captain Steve Neumann who had 33 points (10 goals, 13 assists) in 2012. Neumann was recently named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List (national player of the year) and tabbed the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year.
Head coach Brian Wiese is in his eighth year at the helm of the Hoyas. Wiese was named the NSCAA Division I Coach of the Year after leading Georgetown to last year's national title game. He and his staff were also voted the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year after taking the Hoyas to NCAA Round of 16 in 2010.
THE GEORGETOWN SERIES
Syracuse is 5-10-2 all-time against the Hoyas, including a 2-5-2 record in Washington, D.C. GU is 4-0-1 in the last five meetings between the two teams. The Orange's last win against the Hoyas was a 3-2 decision in 2002.
