WASHINGTON – Nick Perea scored twice in the first half and SU's stout defense was once again on display, as the 20th-ranked Syracuse University men's soccer team captured a 3-1 victory versus No. 3 Georgetown at Shaw Field on Sunday, Aug. 25 in the team's final exhibition match of 2013.
"It was a great way to finish the preseason," said SU head coach Ian McIntyre. "It was great to test ourselves against a team like Georgetown. We started very strong and were able to sustain a lot of pressure. I am proud of how our guys are applying themselves. The work ethic was exceptional."
The preseason finale for both teams served as a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament third-round match. In that game, SU held a one-goal advantage throughout the majority of the contest until GU's Brandon Allen registered the equalizer in the 85th minute to force overtime. The Hoyas eventually advanced on penalty kicks.
This time, however, the Orange emerged victorious.
Perea opened the scoring with two quick-strike tallies. In the eighth minute, a hard tackle by Hoyas goalkeeper Tomas Gomez on Chris Nanco gave SU a penalty-kick opportunity. Perea calmly buried it in the back of the net for a 1-0 Orange lead.
Perea followed with another goal in the 11th minute, flicking Jordan Murrell's cross past Gomez to increase the Orange advantage to 2-0.
Stefanos Stamoulacatos continued his goal-scoring streak in the 56th minute, tallying his third goal in preseason competition when he finished a pinpoint through-ball from Perea to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Hoyas got on the board in the 83rd minute when Steve Neumann converted on a penalty-kick opportunity.
SU goalkeeper Alex Bono played the entire match and recorded seven saves. His last-ditch kick save in the 69th minute helped SU preserve the victory.
With the win, the Orange finishes its preseason slate with a 3-0 record. Syracuse outscored its opponents 11-3 in its three exhibition wins (Fordham, 2-1; Ryerson, 6-1; Georgetown, 3-1).
"We'll take a lot of confidence from this road trip and all of our preseason games," McIntyre said. "We'll need a good week of training to prepare for the start of the regular season."
Syracuse begins the regular-season campaign at Colgate Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at Van Doren Field. The match will be televised live on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
