SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 20 Syracuse improved to 2-0 this preseason with a 6-1 exhibition victory against Toronto's Ryerson University on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Six different players scored for the Orange. High school-turned-college teammates Alex Halis and Chris Nanco led SU with one goal and one assist apiece.
"We had a lot of guys chipping in and a couple of great strikes," SU head coach Ian McIntyre said. "Our movement was pretty good and we'll continue to get better there, but to score six goals you can't really grumble too much about that."
For the second straight outing, sophomore Stefanos Stamoulacatos staked the Orange to an early lead. His left-footed strike off a pass from Halis put Syracuse ahead, 1-0, less than three minutes in. Nanco followed by converting a rebound off the crossbar in the 15th minute to give the Orange a 2-0 halftime advantage.
In the second period, Syracuse opened up a 3-0 lead on a long goal off the foot of Trevor Alexander before Mihalo Mihosovich finally got Ryerson on the board in the 72nd minute.
Already with a comfortable 3-1 lead, Syracuse tacked on three more goals in the game's last 12 minutes. Halis and Nanco, who played together at St. Edmund Campion Secondary School in Canada, teamed up for the Orange's fourth goal with 11:07 remaining. Sophomore Noah Rhynhart converted a penalty kick with 4:45 left, and classmate Ben Ramin closed the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 87th minute.
Syracuse concludes exhibition play against BIG EAST favorite Georgetown Sunday, Aug. 25. The match kicks off at 3:30 p.m. from Shaw Field and serves as a rematch of last year's third-round NCAA Tournament game between the Orange and Hoyas. The two sides tied, 1-1, last November, but Georgetown advanced on penalty kicks and eventually reached the NCAA championship match before losing to Indiana.
"I don't have to motivate the guys for this one," McIntyre said. "We've got a couple important days of training then we'll go down there and test ourselves against one of the best teams in the country. "They're a quality team, obviously, and we know this will be a great way to wrap up our preseason."
