SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- One of the oldest lacrosse rivalries will be renewed on Tuesday, April 16 when the fifth-ranked Orange (9-2) hosts Hobart (5-6) for a 7 p.m. showdown at Carrier Dome. The match is the 99th meeting in a series that dates back to the first year of varsity lacrosse at Syracuse. The Statesmen are the Orange's oldest rival as Hobart was Syracuse's first-ever varsity opponent back on April 26, 1916.
Tickets are available online at SUAthletics.com, over the phone (1-888-DOMETIX), or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office during normal business hours. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for youth ages 12 and under. 'Cuse Kids Club members get in free with their membership card. Parking is $10.
The matchup will be televised locally on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel. Fans can hear the action live on the radio home of the Orange - TK 99 (99.5 FM) and ESPN Radio 97.7 in Syracuse. Live streaming video and audio are available on SUAthletics.com as part of Orange All-Access.
KRAUS-SIMMONS TROPHY ON THE LINE
The Kraus-Simmons trophy has been presented to the victor in this annual showdown every year since 1986. The trophy is named for legendary Orange head coach Roy Simmons Sr., who coached at SU from 1931-70 and won 253 career games, and Babe Kraus who compiled 208 victories at Hobart. Syracuse has won 25 of the 27 meetings since the trophy has been awarded, including 20 in a row from 1987 to 2005. The Statesmen gained possession of the trophy in 1986 and again in 2006, otherwise it has resided in Syracuse.
CLOSE SHAVES
Syracuse's last three game have been one-goal affairs with the Orange coming out on top each time. The Orange beat Princeton (13-12) on April 6, Cornell (13-12) on April 10 and Rutgers (12-11) on April 13. More than that, Syracuse came from behind in each game to post the victory. The Orange trailed Princeton 10-8 in the fourth quarter, Cornell 9-6 in the third and Rutgers 10-5 in the fourth. Overall, Syracuse is 4-2 in one-goal games this season.
LUKE COMETTI ON FIRE
Syracuse senior midfielder Luke Cometti was selected as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career Monday, April 15. Cometti accounted for 40 percent of the team's goals last week in one-goal victories against Cornell and Rutgers. Cometti scored 10 of the team's 25 goals in the two games.
Against Rutgers, Cometti had six goals, including four in the fourth quarter, as SU dug itself out of a 10-5 hole to defeat the Scarlet Knights, 12-11. Cometti's six goals are the most by a BIG EAST player in a conference game this season. He now leads the Orange with 21 goals on the year.
MALTZ NETS ANOTHER HAT TRICK
Junior attackman Derek Maltz scored all three of his goals versus Rutgers in the decisive fourth quarter. He tallied both the tying goal with 2:04 to play and the winning goal with 10 seconds left. It was Maltz's seventh career hat trick and his third of the season. He ranks second on the Orange this year with 20 goals, one behind Cometti (21) for the team lead.
SCOUTING THE STATESMEN
The Statesmen currently sit at 5-6 after starting the season 4-2. Hobart has dropped four of its last five games with consecutive losses to Robert Morris, Denver, Fairfield and Ohio State before rebounding for a double-overtime win against Bellarmine.
The Hobart offense is led by attackmen Alex Love and Cam Stone. Love is a member of the Tewaaraton Award Watch List and leads his team in goals (36) and points (43). He ranks third in the NCAA with 3.27 goals per game. Stone is the club's top feeder with 26 assists (no one else has more than seven) and he assisted on the winning goal Saturday at Bellarmine.
The Hobart midfield lacks scoring punch. The first unit of Jake Silberlicht (6), Taylor Vanderbeek (5) and Zach Reed (6) has combined for 17 goals. By comparison, SU starting midfielder Luke Cometti has 21 by himself.
Veteran goalie Peter Zonino has started all 11 games for Hobart this season. After leading the nation in saves per game last season, Zonino has 129 stops this year and a .510 save percentage.
THE SERIES
The Orange began its varsity lacrosse history with a 9-1 loss at home to Hobart on April 29, 1916. Since then, it has dominated the series thanks to some lengthy winning streaks and holds a 71-25-2 advantage in the rivalry. SU won 10 in a row against Hobart from 1930 to 1936, 11 straight from 1952 to 1963 and a series-best 19 in a row from 1987 to 2005. Hobart's 9-8 victory at the Carrier Dome in 2006 stopped the streak, but SU has rebounded to win the last six matchups, including last year's 13-12 road win.
