SYRACUSE, N.Y. - With seven wins in its last nine matches, the Syracuse volleyball team looks to continue its strong play as of late when the Orange and Boston College rekindle their rivalry on Sunday, Nov. 10 at BC's Power Gym.
LAST TIME OUT:
Hosting Notre Dame in the Carrier Dome finale, Syracuse used a critical 9-0 run to overcome a 22-15 deficit to take the second set and eventually sweep the Irish. It was only the third win against the Fighting Irish in school history, with the last two coming in the two most recent meetings in Syracuse. SU enjoyed its second highest hitting percentage (.313) of ACC-play while limiting Notre Dame to just .188, the third-lowest a conference opponent has hit against the Orange in 2013.
Sophomore Silvi Uattara and junior Nicolette Serratore were two of four Orange women to record hitting percentages higher than .300 on the evening. Uattara finished with a match-high 14 kills for a .303 hitting clip while Serratore had 12 kills and nine digs with a .346 attack percentage. For the ninth straight match, junior Melina Violas reached double-figure digs, matching a season-best 18.
SCOUTING BOSTON COLLEGE:
The Eagles got off to a good start, beginning the season 8-2, which included a six-match win streak. Since then however, Boston College hasn't won in 14 matches with the last 12 coming in conference play. Outside hitter Katty Workman, who was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team, has notched nine double-doubles this season and is fourth in the league with 3.76 kills per set. Her 2.90 digs per set ranks second on the squad. Workman has been the main target for setter Kellie Barnum, who sits ninth in the ACC with 8.83 assists per set.
McCABE RECEIVES ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS:
Redshirt junior middle blocker Lindsay McCabe was selected to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District Volleyball Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Nov. 7. One of the top blockers in the ACC, McCabe ranks second in the league and 29th nationally with 1.31 blocks per set. She has been included on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the Dean's List in all of her semesters at SU and is a two-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree. The all-district teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Student-athletes need to be at least sophomores in academic standing at their institution to be eligible. They also need to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better on a 4.0 scale.

VIOLAS DIGGING THROUGH:
Junior defensive specialist Melina Violas has emerged as the club's top defensive specialist since ACC play began. Through 13 conference matches, the junior is averaging 3.58 digs per set, which ranks 10th in the league. Violas' streak of nine consecutive matches with double-figure digs coincides with Syracuse's 7-2 record in the last nine outings. In SU's match against nationally ranked No. 18 Duke on Nov. 1, Violas recorded a season-best 18 digs, which is the second highest tally of her career. She matched that total in a sweep against Notre Dame on Nov. 6.

SERIES HISTORY:
All-time, Syracuse is 20-6 against former-BIG EAST Conference foe Boston College. The two teams met every year from 1982 to 2005, with the first 25 matches coming in conference play. SU won the first 10 meetings, which included three victories apiece in the 1984 and 1986 seasons. After BC took both contests in 1987, the Orange went on to win 12 of the next 13. Syracuse has won the last two meetings by scores of 3-1 in 2004 and 2005, the former as BIG EAST foes and later as non-conference opponents.
UP NEXT:
The Orange will return to campus for its final home weekend of the season on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. against Pittsburgh, followed by a match with Maryland on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. Seniors Samantha Clarey and Amanda Kullman will both be honored over the weekend.
