CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 21 North Carolina (5-2-5, 2-1-5 ACC) scored the game's lone goal late in the first half to post a 1-0 victory against Syracuse (8-5-1, 2-5-1 ACC) in the first-ever meeting between the two teams Friday, Oct. 18 at Fetzer Field.
"It is disappointing to come away from this game with nothing to show for it," said SU head coach Ian McIntyre. "I thought we were very good and created good chances. An unfortunate goal put us behind, but in an unforgiving conference against a quality team, you can get punished for little mistakes."
The Orange was the aggressor early, registering three shots in the match's first five minutes. It appeared SU claimed the lead when Jordan Murrell's corner kick looked like it crossed the goal line in the 29th minute, but a goal was not awarded by the officials.
Shortly after UNC took the lead. The Tar Heels claimed possession deep in the Orange third after Alex Bono mishandled a pass. North Carolina made two short passes and Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler snuck the ball past Bono to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 advantage in the 38th minute.
Murrell had an opportunity to tie the game in the 60th minute. His bending free kick was on goal, but UNC keeper Brendan Moore dove and snatched the shot out of the air.
The Tar Heels controlled possession throughout the rest of the game, helping preserve the one-goal advantage. SU's best scoring chance in the later stages of the match came less than a minute left. A long cross dropped into the box, but Emil Ekblom was unable to get a toe on the ball as Moore it covered up.
The Tar Heels had 13 shots to SU's five, while the Orange had nine corner kicks to UNC's three.
Bono and Moore finished with three saves apiece. Skylar Thomas paced the Orange with two shots.
Syracuse concludes its two-game road swing when it plays its final non-conference match of the season at Albany on Tuesday, Oct. 22. SU and the Great Danes kick off at 7 p.m.
Match Notes: Syracuse is 1-2 this season against NSCAA-ranked opponents ... Defender Chris Makowski played 83 of the game's 90 minutes, the first time he's come off the field this year.
