ALBANY, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's soccer team (9-5-1) used two second-half goals to defeat Albany (3-9-3) by a final tally of 2-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Bob Ford Field. With the victory, the Orange recorded its 11th consecutive win against a non-conference opponent and finished the non-league portion its 2013 schedule with a 7-0 record.
"It's always tough going on the road," said SU head coach Ian McIntyre. "In the second half, we played well and got a couple of goals. It's difficult to be perfect in the non-conference schedule. It's certainly a great achievement."
The Orange had a flurry of scoring opportunities in the first half, but ultimately the two sides played a scoreless opening period.
In the second half, Syracuse earned a pair of early corner kicks, the second of which led to the match's first goal in the 50th minute. Oyvind Alseth's serve found the head of Juuso Pasanen, who slotted it in the back of the net to give the Orange a 1-0 advantage.
Orange leading scorer Emil Ekblom added to the advantage in the 59th minute after an impressive run down the right side of the pitch. He cut to the inside and fired a well-placed shot in the bottom left corner of the goal to extend the SU lead to two.
The Great Danes nearly sliced the margin in half in the 77th minute when an Albany free kick slid past SU keeper Alex Bono, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside call.
Bono finished with three saves en route to his 17th career shutout and his ACC-leading seventh clean sheet of the season. Albany goalie Eric Orologio finished with three saves. Phil Denara and Leonardo Rodrigues paced the Great Danes with two shots each.
Syracuse returns home on Saturday, Oct. 26 for a pivotal conference match with No. 12 Maryland. The Orange and Terrapins kick off at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Match Notes: With the victory, Syracuse assured itself of finishing with the regular season with a winning record ... Alseth was credited with his fourth assist of the year on Pasanen's goal ... SU improved to 3-0-1 in the last four meetings with the Great Danes.
