SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Alex Bono posted his 16th career shutout to help the SU men's soccer team (8-4-1, 2-4-1 ACC) earn a 0-0 draw against Pittsburgh (0-6-4, 0-5-2 ACC) on Saturday, Oct. 12 at the SU Soccer Stadium. He did not make a save and anchored a defense that only allowed one shot the entire game.
"You have to give Pitt some credit," SU head coach Ian McIntyre said. "They came out and they fought. At the end of the game and in overtime, I thought we were very good. I thought we created chances and moved the ball well. Unfortunately tonight, we came up against a good goalkeeper."
Bono's counterpart, Dan Lynd, was under siege all night. He stopped 11 shots to help the Panthers come away with a point in the league standings.
Syracuse owned a 20-1 advantage in shots and controlled the game throughout its entirety. The Orange had numerous chances to crack the Pittsburgh defense, but was unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
Juuso Pasanen and Alex Halis each earned free kicks during the first half in the attacking third from dangerous striking areas, but both shots were knocked away by the Pitt defense.
The Orange made several runs into the box in the second half, highlighted by Nick Perea's on-target strike in the 83rd minute that resulted in a diving save by Lynd. Stefanos Stamoulacatos, who continually tested the Pitt backline with seven total shots, nearly gave the Orange the lead in the 89th minute, but his shot clipped the post.
Syracuse had multiple chances for the golden goal in the second overtime period, including another Stamoulacatos attempt that struck the post in the 109th minute.
The Orange is back in action on Friday, Oct. 18 when it travels to Chapel Hill to face North Carolina. The Orange and Tar Heels kick off at 6:30 p.m. The match will be televised live on the ACC Regional Network and online via ESPN3.
Match Notes: Bono now ranks fourth in the SU record books for career shutouts … SU's 20 shots were its most since also taking 20 against Seton Hall on Sept. 22, 2012.
