SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange looks to continue its winningest season since 1999 when it travels to Tampa, Fla. to battle USF on Saturday, Oct. 13. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Corbett Soccer Stadium.
Â
VALE ON A ROLL
With six goals this season, Jordan Vale has scored the most goals by an Orange freshman since Hansen Woodruff registered seven in 2006. Vale's total is six shy of Mark DiMonte, who, as a rookie, registered a team-record 12 goals in 1984.
Â
Vale scored two of SU's three goals last week to earn BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors. He notched the team's opening goal in a 2-1 victory against Rutgers, and scored SU's only goal against Louisville.
Â
MURRELL A WEAPON ON CORNER KICKS
Sophomore Jordan Murrell assisted on all three Orange goals last week against Rutgers and Louisville. The three tallies were the direct result of corner kick services by Murrell.
Â
For the season, Murrell has nine points, including five assists. His five helpers are tied for the team lead with Ted Cribley and rank fourth in the BIG EAST. He is tied with Georgetown's Steve Neumann for first in the conference in assists (3) versus BIG EAST opponents.
Â
Murrell's nine points are the most for an Orange defender since Ryan Hall had nine (four goals, one assist) in 2001.
Â
SCOUTING USF
The Bulls are coming off of a 1-0 victory versus Mercer Wednesday. Before its triumph against the Bears, USF recorded three consecutive draws in BIG EAST play after opening the conference season with a 1-0 win against Providence.
Â
Leston Paul leads the Bulls' scoring charge with 11 points (three goals, five assists). He is tied for the team lead in goals (three) with Roberto Alterio, who also has an assist. Eric Osswald has played 12 matches in goal, posting a 6-2-4 record with a goals-against average of 1.08.
Â
George Kiefer is in his 11th season at the helm of the USF program. He's led the Bulls to six NCAA Tournament appearances, including a berth in the quarterfinal round in 2011. Kiefer previously served as an assistant coach at Connecticut, where he helped the Huskies win the 2000 national championship.
Â
THE USF SERIES
Saturday's match marks the eighth meeting between Syracuse and USF. The two schools have played once every year since 2005.
Â
The Bulls lead the overall series, 4-2-1. The Orange is seeking its first win in the series since a 1-0 victory in 2007.
Â
RECAPPING THE LOUISVILLE GAME
Syracuse jumped out to an early one-goal lead when Vale registered his second goal in two games, but Louisville struck back with one goal before halftime and another before the final horn for a 2-1 victory.
