SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team was defeated in five set (25-21, 25-22, 27-29, 27-29, 12-15) by the University of South Florida in the 2011 BIG EAST opener Friday night at the Women's Building.
The Orange (9-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) had a strong start to the match taking the first two sets 25-21 and 25-22, respectively. In the opening frame, SU's lead grew to as much as seven at 17-10 and the Orange secured the set on a USF hitting error.
Trailing 10-3 in the second frame, SU used a 15-3 run to seize control. At set point, Andrea Fisher used one of her team-high 16 kills to give Syracuse a 2-0 advantage heading into the locker room.
Fisher continued her impressive hitting in the third set with five kills, but the Bulls' Valerie El Houssine took control of the game, racking up 10 of her career-high 30 kills in the frame. USF eventually outlasted the Orange 29-27 to force a fourth set.
The two sides once again played to a 29-27 decision in favor of the Bulls, as a fifth set would decide the match.
USF took the opening point in set five and never relinquished the lead. With SU trailing 13-10, two-consecutive blocks from Sam Hinz and Nicolette Serratore brought the Orange within one, but that would be the rest of the scoring for SU as USF took the last two points and the match.
Serratore and Lindsay McCabe joined Fisher in double-digit kills as they both logged 12 spikes, while Serratore had a team and career-high seven blocks. McCabe and Hinz each had six.
Libero Ashley Williams also set a career-high as her 31 digs were two more than her outing last year against Kent State. Setter Laura Homann dished out a season-high 51 assist.
The Orange has a quick turn-around as Syracuse travels to Niagara for a 12 p.m. contest with the Purple Eagles.
