Volleyball Earns Split At Blue And White

After dropping its first match of the day against Dayton, 3-0, the Syracuse volleyball team responded with a four-set victory against Cornell (23-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-12) to conclude play at the Blue and White Classic. Cornell grabbed the first set of the match before the Orange rallied to win the next three. Lindsay McCabe, who totaled eight kills against the Big Red, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
In Syracuse's first match of the day, Dayton jumped out to an 11-5 advantage in the opening set and never looked back en route to a three-game sweep of the Orange (25-19, 25-10, 25-13). Laura Homann tallied all but one assist during the match with 26, while Nicolette Serratore led the way for SU with eight kills. Ashley Williams was SU's leader in digs with 12.
Rachel Krabacher led the attack for the Flyers with a team-high 17 kills, 14 digs and four aces. The Flyers held Syracuse, the nation's leading team in blocks going into the tournament, to just 1.0 block during the contest.
Trailing 1-0 entering the second set against Cornell in the afternoon match, the Orange opened with a 9-1 run to begin the second set and coasted to a 25-13 win to even the match at one. The third set saw back and forth action between both teams before Syracuse pulled away at the end, and continued the momentum into the fourth and final set, winning by 13 points.
Andrea Fisher and Sam Hinz paced the Orange against the Big Red with career-highs of 18 and 17 kills, respectively. SU, which had five players register double-digit digs, were led by Williams throughout the tournament.
Laura Homann collected 52 assists throughout the match to go along with 12 digs. SU picked up 17.0 total blocks against Cornell, bringing the team's season total to 161.0 for the season.
