BUFFALO, N.Y. – A season-high .421 hitting percentage from Lindsay McCabe was not enough to overcome four Bulls players with double-digits kills as the Syracuse University volleyball team (8-3) fell to tournament host Buffalo (6-5) in five sets (22-25, 25-15, 22-25, 28-26, 7-15) on Friday night.
McCabe connected on 11-of-19 attempts, along with five blocks and three digs. Fellow middle and the nation's second leading blocker Sam Hinz contributed seven kills and a match-high 10 blocks. Hinz raised her blocks per set average to 1.72 for the season.
Buffalo controlled the first set with SU only leading once in the frame at 3-2. The Bulls would stretch their lead to as much as seven (20-14). The Orange closed the gap to one point at 23-22 but two consecutive kills by Christine Fritsche secured the first set for UB.
The Orange would rebound in the second set as SU captured the first six points and watched its lead grow to as large as 11 at 20-9. A service error by Abby Niekamp wrapped up the set for Syracuse.
Coming out of the locker room, the two sides would spilt sets three and four and ultimately forced a deciding fifth set. With the score knotted at two apiece, the Bulls would surge ahead thanks in part to a 7-2 run. At 14-7 in favor of Buffalo, a kill by Liz Scott wrapped up the victory for the Bulls.
Freshman Andrea Fisher registered double-digit kills for the sixth time this season, concluding the match with 12 kills on 35 attempts. Setter Laura Homann had 44 assists, while libero Ashley Williams led the team with 23 digs.
SU takes the court again tomorrow afternoon with a match against Dayton set for 12:30 p.m. EST. The Orange will then play Cornell at 5:00 p.m. in its final match of the tournament.
