BUFFALO, N.Y. – Participating in its fourth and final regular-season tournament, the Syracuse University volleyball team (8-2) travels to Buffalo, N.Y., for the Blue and White Classic this weekend.
The Orange, riding a three-match winning streak, looks to continue its momentum against tournament host Buffalo (5-5), the Cornell Big Red (2-5) and the Dayton Flyers (4-5).
LAST WEEK: The Orange won the Blackbird Invitational hosted by Long Island University. Syracuse defeated LIU in its opening match, 3-1. Ying Shen recorded 10 kills with a career-high .625 hitting percentage. Syracuse then defeated Temple by the same score, paced by 16 kills from Noemie Lefebvre. SU concluded the tournament with a win against Lehigh in straight-sets. The Orange had 14 student-athletes contribute against the Mountain Hawks.
DEFENSE: Syracuse is leading the nation in blocks through the first three weeks of action. Sam Hinz has the second most blocks in the country (64) and the fifth best blocks per set average (1.68). She leads the BIG EAST Conference in all major blocking categories.
Fellow middle blocker Lindsay McCabe is 24th nationally and third in the conference for blocks per set.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
Buffalo: Syracuse marks the third BIG EAST opponent Buffalo has played this season. The Bulls opened the season with a sweep of Seton Hall, while St. John's handed Buffalo a loss just last week. Lone senior Abby Niekamp leads the way offensively for UB with 100 kills and a 2.67 hitting percentage.
Cornell: The Big Red ended its five match losing streak against North Carolina A&T last weekend in its final contest of the VCU Tournament. Cornell uses a balanced attack as 10 players have recorded double-digit kills.
Dayton: The Flyers began the season in the AVCA Top 25 but has fallen out after five straight losses. Dayton's losses, however, have come against three ranked teams in No. 3 Illinois, No. 18 Michigan and No. 21 Pepperdine, along with losses to Tennessee and Florida State, who are the first two teams receiving votes.
SU and Buffalo square off at 7 p.m. on Friday night. The Orange then plays Dayton on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., followed by Cornell at 5 p.m.
