FOXBORO, Mass. - Top-seeded Syracuse lost to Maryland, 6-5, in overtime in the NCAA quarterfinals on Sunday, May 22 at Gillette Stadium. Maryland's Grant Catalino scored the game-winner with 32 seconds remaining in the extra session.
The Orange closes the season with a 15-2 record, and the senior class concludes its tenure with a 60-8 record, which is the most wins for any four-year group in school history. The loss breaks Syracuse's streak of 25 consecutive NCAA Tournament quarterfinal victories.
Seniors Jovan Miller and Jeremy Thompson led the SU offense with two goals each, including Miller's game-tying tally with 1:05 left to play. Senior goalie John Galloway spearheaded a tremendous defensive effort with 11 saves.
The game was a defensive battle the entire way and the 11 combined goals were the fewest ever in an NCAA Tournament game featuring Syracuse.
After more thaN 10 minutes without a goal to start the game, the Orange eventually opened the scoring on a goal by Thompson with 3:03 remaining in the first quarter. The Orange offensive possession began when senior Joel White forced a turnover. On the play, White became Syracuse's career leader in ground balls with his 279th and finished with 283 for his career after picking up five Sunday against the Terps.
With 4:45 left in the first half, Miller gave the Orange a two-score lead with an unassisted goal. Maryland responded with a pair of goals in the next two minutes to tie the game, 2-2, just before halftime. Drew Snider scored with 3:58 left in the first half, and Scott LaRue tied the game with 2:03 left before intermission.
In the third quarter, Maryland (12-4) scored two consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead with 7:42 remaining. Jake Bernhardt scored with 9:37 remaining and Travis Reed scored less than two minutes later to provide the two-goal cushion.
Syracuse's JoJo Marasco trimmed the lead to one, 4-3, finding the back of the net with 1:46 left in the third quarter, but Maryland increased the margin to two again with one second left in the third period when LaRue scored by deflecting a pass from Ryan Young past Galloway to give the Terps a 5-3 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Thompson brought the Orange to within one, 5-4, with his second goal of the game at the 10:53 mark, and then Miller scored to tie the game at five with 1:05 remaining in regulation.
The Terps won the opening faceoff in overtime, and after a shot by Snider, senior Thomas Guadagnolo checked the ball loose from Bernhardt. Junior Kevin Drew collected the ground ball and raced into the attack box on a fastbreak. Drew let a shot go wide and Maryland backed it up to regain possession.
After a successful clear, Young found Catalino and he rifled a shot past Galloway for the winner. For Young, it was his third assist of the day and he finished with a team-best three points.
LaRue's two goals led the Terps in that category.
In such a low-scoring game possessions were critical and Maryland benefitted from an 11-3 advantage at faceoff X thanks to Curtis Holmes, who took every draw in the contest. Maryland also outshot Syracuse, 34-22, and held a 19-12 margin in ground balls.
Game Notes: Galloway played the entire game and finishes his career as the NCAA all-time leader in minutes played (3,776) ... His 11 saves increased his career total to 601, which ranks seventh on the school's all-time saves list ... The Orange's loss was its first in the quarterfinal round since a 13-6 defeat at North Carolina in 1981 ... It was also the team's first loss at Gillette Stadium ... In addition to the five ground balls, White set the Orange single-game NCAA Tournament record with four caused turnovers against the Terps.
