SYRACUSE, N.Y. - One of the oldest lacrosse rivalries in Central New York is renewed on Tuesday, April 19 when the fourth-ranked Orange hosts Hobart at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The match is the 97th meeting in a series that dates back more than 90 years. The Statesmen are the Orange's oldest rival as Hobart was SU's first-ever varsity lacrosse opponent back on April 26, 1916.
Syracuse enters the game with a 10-1 record after defeating BIG EAST foe Providence, 13-3, at the New England Lacrosse Classic on April 16. The same day, Hobart earned a 13-10 decision versus Bellarmine in its regular-season home finale to improve to 5-6.
Tickets are available online at SUathletics.com, over the phone (1-888-DOMETIX), or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office during normal business hours. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for youth ages 12 and under. 'Cuse Kids Club members get in free with their membership card. Parking is $10.
The game will be televised throughout New York on Time Warner Sports. Fans can also hear the action live on the radio home of the Orange - TK 99 (99.5 FM). Live streaming video and audio are available on SUathletics.com as part of Orange All-Access.
KRAUS-SIMMONS TROPHY ON THE LINE
The Kraus-Simmons trophy has been presented to the victor in this annual showdown every year since 1986. The trophy is named for legendary Orange head coach Roy Simmons Sr., who coached at SU from 1931-70 and won 253 career games, and Babe Kraus who compiled 208 victories at Hobart. Syracuse has won 23 of the 25 meetings since the trophy has been awarded, including 20 in a row from 1987 to 2005. The Statesmen gained possession of the trophy in 1986 and again in 2006, otherwise it has resided in Syracuse.
BIG WINNERS
For the second time in three outings, Syracuse will face one of the winningest programs in college lacrosse. The Orange squared off against Cornell on April 12, the seventh-winningest program in Division I history. Now it takes on Hobart, which is tied for fifth on that prestigious list with 722 wins. Syracuse itself ranks second in all-time victories (816). The Orange and Statesmen have combined to win 1,538 games between them.
LAST TIME OUT
The Orange defense held Providence without a goal for the game's final 50:07 and cruised to a 13-3 victory over the Friars in the opening game of the New England Lacrosse Classic at Gillette Stadium on April 16. Syracuse tallied the last 11 goals of the contest, including eight in the fourth quarter. Senior Stephen Keogh finished with a game-high five points (3g, 2a). Junior Bobby Eilers contributed a career-best three goals in the victory. The Orange dominated every facet of the game, outshooting the Friars, 40-12, and holding big advantages in ground balls (34-15) and faceoffs (16-4).
DOMINANT D
Providence's three goals Saturday was the fewest by an SU opponent since April 25, 2009 when Massachusetts mustered just three goals in a 10-3 loss to the Orange. The Friars 50:07 was the longest scoring drought for an Orange opponent going back until at least the late 1980s. The only other comparable drought since then occurred in 1998 when Syracuse shut out Hobart for 50:06 in an 18-5 victory.
RESERVE MIDDIES EXCEL AGAINST PROVIDENCE
The Orange's backup midfielders found their offensive stride against Providence. Of Syracuse's 13 goals, five were by reserve midfielders. In addition to the three by Eilers, redshirt sophomores Pete Coleman and Steve Ianzito had one each in the fourth quarter.
THE SERIES VERSUS HOBART
The Orange began its varsity lacrosse history with a 9-1 loss at home to Hobart on April 29, 1916. Since then, it has dominated the series thanks to some lengthy winning streaks. SU won six consecutive meetings from 1921 to 1926, 10 in a row from 1930 to 1936, 11 straight from 1952 to 1963 and a series-best 19 in a row from 1987 to 2005. Hobart's 9-8 victory at the Carrier Dome in 2006 stopped the streak, but SU has rebounded to win the last four matchups, including a 9-8 victory in overtime last year at McCooey Field.
UP NEXT
Syracuse steps back into BIG EAST Conference on play on Saturday, April 23. The Orange will face Rutgers in the second game of the ESPNU Warrior Classic at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn.
