SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Despite career days from Sam Hinz and Lindsay McCabe, The Syracuse University volleyball team (13-7, 3-2) was unable to complete its comeback as the Orange lost to Georgetown in five sets on Sunday at the Women's Building.
Hinz set career-high with 13 blocks and raised her BIG EAST leading blocks per set average to 1.56. McCabe posted 17 kills, which was two better than her outing last year against Kent State.
With the first set knotted up at 11-11, the Orange used a 5-1 spurt to give SU some breathing room. Syracuse would eventually take the first set 25-21.
Georgetown (10-9, 2-4) won both the second and third frame and was helped out by the Orange, who hit a combined .045 in those two sets.
However, Syracuse responded with a resounding 25-16 fourth set victory which saw McCabe connect on seven of her 11 attempts and tie the match up at two games apiece.
In the deciding set, Georgetown ran out to a 9-4 advantage before Syracuse rallied to tie the match at 12. But two Syracuse errors along with a kill by the Hoyas' Alex Johnson gave Georgetown the 15-13 fifth set triumph and the match.
SU is now off for six days until the Orange host Marquette next Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Women's Building. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
