SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After capturing the first set, the Syracuse University volleyball team (13-8, 3-3) lost the final three as the Orange was defeated by Marquette (16-5, 6-0) on Saturday afternoon (25-18, 23-25, 23-25, 14-25) at the Women's Building.
Syracuse came out firing on all cylinders in the first frame and had the lead the entire set. SU would gain its largest lead at 19-9, courtesy of a Sam Hinz kill. The SU defense held the Golden Eagles to a .022 hitting clip and tallied six blocks in the first set.
However, the MU trio of Ashley Beyer, Daniell Carlson and Ciara Jones would not be held down for long. Marquette would narrowly take sets two and three by the score of 25-23, led by those three who finished the match with 13, 16 and 17 kills, respectively.
The fourth and final frame was controlled from start to finish by the Golden Eagles as Marquette would conclude the match with a 25-14 fourth set triumph.
Noemie Lefebvre led the SU offensive attack with 16 kills on the afternoon. Hinz and Andrea Fisher joined Lefebvre in double figures with 10 and 12 spikes apiece. Ashley Williams had a team-high 15 digs.
The Orange plays its final non-conference match of the season this Wednesday at Binghamton then returns home to host Rutgers and Seton Hall next weekend.
