Jones Makes Seven Saves At Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Redshirt freshman goalie Ryan Jones finished with seven saves, but the Orange couldn't overcome a late first-half goal by Providence's Matt Marcin and lost a 1-0 decision to the Friars on Friday, Sept. 25 at Glay Field.

Jones, who entered Friday's game second in the BIG EAST in saves, now has 41 stops on the season. Four of his saves came in the first half as the Orange (1-7-0, 0-3-0) successfully fought off three Providence corner kicks and the Friars' first seven shot attempts. However, Marcin tallied his first goal of the season in the 42nd minute off a cross from Nick Cianci to give the Friars a 1-0 advantage at the intermission.

Providence (4-3-0, 1-2-0) outshot the Orange, 8-1, in the first period with senior Hansen Woodruff putting Syracuse's only shot attempt of the half on goal in the 33rd minute.

Syracuse increased the offensive pressure in the second half, recording four shots in the stanza, but could not equalize the match. Chances by Woodruff and junior Geoff Lytle in the 79th and 80th minutes, respectively, each went wide, and Providence goalie Timothy Murray turned away a shot by senior Tom Perevegyencev in the 83rd minute to seal the win for the Friars.

Murray made two saves in the contest for Providence to record his fourth shutout of the season.

Woodruff paced the Orange offense with two shots.

Syracuse continues its road trip on Sunday, Sept. 27 with a 6 p.m. match against Connecticut at Morrone Stadium.

Match Notes: Jones' seven saves against Friars marked the second-best single-game total of his career behind his 12-save performance on Sept. 7 at Colgate … Woodruff, Perevegyencev, freshman Mark Brode and senior Kenny Caceros all made their eighth starts of the year at Providence … The quartet has started every game in 2009.
