STORRS, Conn. – Connecticut scored two early goals and the Orange never recovered as the Huskies went on to defeat Syracuse, 2-0, on Sunday, Sept. 27 before a crowd of 2,697 at Morrone Stadium. The Orange dropped to 1-8-0 on the season and 0-4-0 in BIG EAST play. Connecticut improved to 4-2-2 overall and 3-1-0 in the conference.
Both goals in the match came in the first 15 minutes of play. Cruz Hernandez opened the scoring with his first score of the year at the 11-minute mark to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Tony Cascio tallied his second goal of 2009 when he buried the rebound after SU redshirt freshman goalie Ryan Jones made a save on a shot by Connecticut's Alan Ponce.
The Orange defense stiffened after Cascio's goal and did not surrender another goal in the game's final 75 minutes. Syracuse also limited the Huskies to just five shots in the second half, but the two early goals were all the Connecticut defense needed as it held the Orange to five shots in the match. Four of SU's offensive chances came in the second half, but each time the Orange failed to find the scoring column.
For the Huskies, it was their second straight shutout. Connecticut goalie Josh Ford, a Liverpool, N.Y. native, made three saves in the second period to register his fifth clean sheet of the year.
Jones also finished with three stops for the Orange.
Offensively, five Syracuse players recorded shots in the contest, including senior defender Sean Summerville who put his first attempt of the year on goal early in the second half.
Syracuse continues its three-game road trip on Friday, Oct. 2 when it opens BIG EAST Red Division action at Rutgers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m at Yurcak Field.
Match Notes: Senior Elliott Townsend made his first start of the season in the match … Sophomore Nick Olivetti saw his first action of the season after missing the first eight games of 2009 due to injury … Olivetti entered the match in the 27th minute.
