SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange men's soccer team (1-5-0, 0-1-0) concludes its first BIG EAST weekend of the season with a cross-over match against Blue Division rival Georgetown (3-2-0, 0-1-0) on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 3 p.m. in the SU Soccer Stadium. Both squads are searching for their first conference victories of 2009.
Sunday is "Youth Soccer Tailgate Day" at the SU Soccer Stadium. All youth soccer clubs are welcome to tailgate in the parking lot prior to the match. Youth teams are also invited to play 3-on-3 or 4-on-4 games before the game. Admission and parking is free.
WOODRUFF CLOSING IN ON 60 CAREER POINTS
Senior Hansen Woodruff recorded an assist on position-mate Tom Perevegyencev's goal Friday against Seton Hall. For Woodruff, it was the 10th assist of his career and it increased his career point total to 58 (24g, 10a) in 53 matches. He is two points shy of 60 points for his career and five points short of tying Eric Puls for 10th on the Orange's all-time list. Puls registered 63 points from 1989-92.
BRODE ADDS OFFENSIVE SPARK
Freshman midfielder Mark Brode continues to be a catalyst for the Orange offense. Brode recorded his team-leading second assist of the season Friday against Seton Hall. He helped set up SU's only goal of the match when he headed a free kick to Woodruff who then played the ball across the goal mouth to Perevegyencev for the easy score.
For the season, Brode ranks third on the squad with four points and he is one of four players on the Orange to start every match.
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
The Hoyas are receiving votes in three of the four national polls, including the most recent edition of the NSCAA/adidas rankings released on Sept. 15. Georgetown enters Sunday's game with a 3-2-1 overall record after losing to St. John's, 2-0, on Friday in its conference opener. The Hoyas have won three of their last four overall, including victories against Coastal Carolina (3-0) on Sept. 11 and UNC Asheville (2-0) on Sept. 13 to win the Davidson adidas Classic Tournament.
Georgetown's defense has been the key to its recent success. Prior to the St. John's match, the Hoyas hadn't allowed a goal since Sept. 6 against UCLA and they have shut out three of their last four opponents. Senior defender Len Coleman was picked to the Davidson adidas Classic All-Tournament Team and is the reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. Offensively, Seth C'deBaca leads the team with three goals and one assist. Chandler Diggs is second on the team with five overall points (two goals, one assist).
Brian Wiese is in his fourth season as the head coach at Georgetown after serving as the associate head coach at Notre Dame in 2005. He guided the Hoyas to an overall record of 11-5-3 last season and an appearance in the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals.
SYRACUSE-GEORGETOWN SERIES
Syracuse and Georgetown first met on the pitch in 1990. Since then, the two rivals have played 15 times with the Hoyas holding a 9-5-1 advantage in the series. The Orange and Hoyas played every year from 1990 to 2000. Syracuse's last victory in the series was a 3-2 overtime decision in 2002.
