SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse outshot Georgetown, 13-11, but could not convert any of its opportunities, and the Hoyas (4-2-1, 1-1-0) scored once in each half to hand the Orange (1-6-0, 0-2-0) a 2-0 loss on Sunday, Sept. 20 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
The Orange controlled the pace of play for most of the game and recorded the first good scoring chance of the match when senior Tom Perevegyencev played a cross to streaking classmate Hansen Woodruff in the seventh minute. Georgetown keeper Matthew Brutto was out of position, but he was bailed out by a Hoya defender who stepped in and cleared ball.
The two squads played approximately 25 more minutes of scoreless soccer before Uche Onyeador scored his first goal of the year from in close to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead at the 32:42 mark. Redshirt freshman keeper Ryan Jones got a piece of the shot, but it still found the back of the net.
Down 1-0, Syracuse continued to attack and nearly equalized the match with just under five minutes to play in the half. Senior Elliott Townsend rifled a left-footed volley, but Brutto made a diving save and Georgetown maintained its one-goal edge.
In the second half, the Orange kept the pressure on as rookie Mawuena Agbossoumonde had two consecutive shots to tie the match in the first five minutes of the half. His first attempt was blocked and his follow-up chance was denied by Brutto. Senior Kenny Caceros had an opportunity to get the Orange on the board in the 63rd minute, but Brutto was there again with a diving stop on Caceros' blast from just outside the 18.
With the Orange still pressing forward in search of the equalizer, Georgetown countered after an Orange turnover as Andy Riemer slipped behind the SU backline and scored on a breakaway in the 79th minute to give the Hoyas a 2-0 advantage.
Down by two, SU head coach Dean Foti went with three defenders in the back during the final eight minutes of the game in an attempt to generate more offense, but the Hoyas held firm and recorded their fourth shutout in the last five games.
“We're getting chances,” Foti said after the match. “We're getting really good chances. If weren't getting chances or the ones that we're getting aren't good ones then you need to make adjustments, but we're getting shots. We're getting good shots. We're getting good looks and good opportunities to score goals. The only thing left to do is put them in.”
Jones made four saves for Syracuse to increase his season total to 34 in six games (5.7 spg). Brutto stopped six shots for the Hoyas. Caceros paced the SU offense with four shots.
Syracuse returns to action on Friday, Sept 25 when it plays at Providence. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Glay Field.
Match Notes: Attendance for Sunday's game was 1,128 … The Orange has drawn more than 1,000 fans for all three home of its home matches in 2009 and owns an average home attendance of 1,286.
