SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior forward Tom Perevegyencev scored his third goal of the season, but the Orange couldn't overcome a hat trick by Seton Hall's Dritan Sela and Syracuse (1-5-0, 0-1-0) lost its BIG EAST opener to the Pirates, 3-1, in front of 1,311 fans at the SU Soccer Stadium on Friday, Sept. 18.
Friday night's crowd was the third-largest in the history of the SU Soccer Stadium and the second consecutive gathering of more than 1,000 for the Orange. More than 1,400 fans were in attendance for the team's home opener on Sept. 5 against Cornell.
The fans got a treat early as both teams scored goals in the game's first 30 minutes. Sela got the Pirates on the board first when headed home a cross in the 21st minute.
Seton Hall's advantage didn't last long as Perevegyencev's tally came in the 27th minute after freshman Mark Brode headed an Orange free kick to senior Hansen Woodruff in the box. Woodruff played the ball across the goal mouth to a wide open Perevegyencev and he volleyed it home to equalize the match 1-1.
For Perevegyencev, the goal tied him with Woodruff for the team lead and was the 13th of his career.
Syracuse had an opportunity to take the lead with less than eight minutes to go in the half after Seton Hall (4-2-0, 1-0-0) was whistled for a foul in the box. The play resulted in a penalty kick for Woodruff, but his shot to the upper left corner was stopped by Seton Hall goalie Paul McHenry, and the two teams remained tied 1-1 at the intermission.
In the second half, Sela scored an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute after beating an Orange defender one-on-one to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead, and completed the hat trick in the 77th minute when he got on the other end of a pass from Andrew Welker.
For Syracuse, redshirt freshman goalie Ryan Jones made his fourth consecutive start and finished with five saves. McHenry made 10 saves for the Pirates, including seven in the first half. McHenry was tested all night as the Orange put 11 of its 17 shots on goal and outshot Seton Hall, 17-15, for the match.
Syracuse continues BIG EAST play on Sunday, Sept. 20 when it hosts Georgetown at the SU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. and admission is free.
Match Notes: Sela's hat trick was the third by an Orange opponent at the SU Soccer Stadium and the first for an opposing player since Villanova's Mike Seamon scored three times on Oct. 24, 2007 … Orange senior defender Pete Hill missed the match due to injury, ending his consecutive starts streak at 45 games.
