Late Goal Pushes DePaul Past SU, 2-1

CHICAGO – Alex Mangan scored both goals for DePaul to lead the Blue Demons past Syracuse, 2-1, on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Wish Field. SU freshman midfielder Mark Brode tallied a goal in the 36th minute for the Orange, but Mangan scored with 6:46 remaining in regulation to snap a 1-1 tie and lift the hosts to victory.
For Brode, it was his second career goal and it increased his season point total to six, which ranks third on the team.
Brode's goal came just over a minute after Mangan scored his first of the game at 34:04 to give the Blue Demons a 1-0 advantage. Senior Tom Perevegyencev played the ball left to Brode and he converted the chance with a shot to the far side of the DePaul net, squaring the match at the 35:10 mark.
In the second half, Syracuse generated some good scoring chances, but wasn't unable to get the go-ahead goal. Blue Demons' netminder Joe Ferrari came up with two saves in the second period to help preserve the deadlock. He denied a header by sophomore #L.J. Papaleo# in the 60th minute and stopped a shot by Perevegyencev in the 78th minute.
Ferrari's counterpart, Ryan Jones, was up to the challenge also recording a pair of saves in the second half. However, after Orange senior Hansen Woodruff was issued a yellow card at 82:59, Mangan deflected Antonio Aguilar's ensuing free kick past Jones for the match winner.
The goal put an end to a physical contest that saw each side receive three yellow cards. A total of 20 fouls were also whistled in the match.
Jones finished with three saves in the game for the Orange, while Ferrari also totaled three saves for DePaul to earn the victory.
Brode led the Orange with two shots.
Syracuse returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 27 when it hosts 2008 NCAA semifinalist St. John's at the SU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and admission is free.
