SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men's soccer team gave its fans a Halloween treat on Saturday, Oct. 31. Syracuse scored three times in the second half to overcome a one-goal deficit and defeat Cincinnati, 3-1, at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Senior Hansen Woodruff tied his career high with two goals, and sophomore Justin Arena scored the eventual match winner in the 74th minute. The goal was Arena's first of the year.
The Orange dominated the Bearcats (8-10-0, 3-8-0) in every facet of the game. Syracuse outshot Cincinnati, 17-8, in the match and put 12 of its attempts on goal. The Orange also registered a season-high eight corner kicks, including six in the first half.
Despite being the more dangerous team, the Orange found itself down 1-0 at halftime as Sam Klosterman volleyed home a corner kick with 1:33 left in the first half to give the visitors the lead. However, the Bearcats' advantage didn't last long as Woodruff collected a pass from sophomore #L.J. Papaleo# and flipped a shot over Cincinnati goalie Joey Barnard to tie the match in the 53rd minute.
The Orange continued to be the aggressor, generating four shots in the next 20 minutes. The team's hard work in the final third eventually paid off as Papaleo's shot at the 72:59 mark deflected over the endline resulting in an SU corner kick. Arena triggered play on the set piece and bent a left-footed shot that glanced off Barnard into the net with 16:20 left to give the Orange a 2-1 lead.
Just over three minutes later, Woodruff put the match out of reach with his second goal of the night. He was the beneficiary of some precision passing by senior Tom Perevegyencev and junior Manny Sevillano as Perevegyencev played the ball to Sevillano, who flicked it to Woodruff for the score.
The Syracuse defense did the rest, holding the Bearcats scoreless for the final 13:15 to produce the victory.
Orange goalkeeper Ryan Jones made four saves in the contest, including three in the second half to earn the win. Barnard recorded nine saves in his first appearance of the year for the Bearcats.
Syracuse (3-14-0, 2-8-0) will conclude its 2009 season on Sunday, Nov. 1. The Orange will host St. John's in a make-up game at the SU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is 6 p.m.
