SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Tom Perevegyencev scored his team-leading fifth goal of the year in the second half of a 2-1 loss to Adelphi on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The match was final non-league contest for the Orange this season.
Trailing 2-0, Perevegyencev scored off a nifty set piece in the 56th minute to cut the Adelphi margin in half. Seniors Hansen Woodruff and Kenny Caceros recorded assists on the play, which started on a free kick after the Panthers were whistled for a foul. Caceros played the ball short to freshman Mark Brode, who gave it back to Caceros. He served it into the box for Woodruff, who laid it off to Perevegyencev for the easy goal.
The score sparked the Orange offense as the hosts pressured Adelphi for the remaining 35 minutes in an attempt to tally the equalizer. Syracuse's best chance to even the match came with 4:37 remaining in regulation. Sophomore Nick Olivetti got free in front of the Adelphi net, but his volley off a cross just missed the near post. It proved to be the Orange's final scoring chance of the match and Panthers slowed the pace of play for the remainder of regulation to eventually emerge victorious.
Freshman forward Issa Tall notched both goals for the Panthers (9-2-4). They were his 12th and 13th goals of the season. Tall gave the visitors a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game, scoring on the match's first shot when got on the other end of a cross by James Diana 54 seconds in. The Panthers extended their advantage to 2-0 as Tall registered the eventual game-winner on a similar play with 11 seconds to go in the first half.
Redshirt freshman goalie Ryan Jones made five saves in the contest for Syracuse, including three in the second half, and two after Perevegyencev's goal, to give the Orange (2-13-0) a chance to tie the match. Adelphi keeper Holder Thorne registered two saves to earn the win.
Syracuse will play three BIG EAST matches to close out the regular season beginning with DePaul on Saturday, Oct. 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Wish Field in Chicago.
Match Notes: Woodruff's assist was his team-leading third of the year and the 12th of his career … He is one shy of tying Ed Pinon (1989-90) for 10th on Syracuse's career assists ledger … Caceros' helper was his second of 2009 … His two assists this season are a personal-best.
