PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Orange men's soccer team (2-8-0, 1-4-0) erupted for a season-high three goals en route to its first BIG EAST win of the season, 3-0, versus Red Division leader Rutgers on Friday, Oct. 2 at Yurcak Field. It was the Orange's first shutout of the year and ended the team's seven-game losing streak.
Three different players scored for the Orange as seniors Tom Perevegyencev, Hansen Woodruff and Elliott Townsend all found the back of the net Friday.
Perevegyencev and Woodruff's goals came in the span of 1:59 and put the Scarlet Knights in a 2-0 hole midway through the first half. Perevegyencev opened the scoring at the 31:14 mark when he beat Rutgers goalie Adam Klink with a shot to the lower left corner off a feed from sophomore #L.J. Papaleo#. Woodruff followed with the 25th goal of his career to extend the lead to two at the intermission.
The Orange maintained its two-goal margin late into the second half before Townsend sealed the win with his first career goal in the 85th minute after reserve goalie Alex Morgans mishandled a clearing opportunity.
Redshirt freshman goalie Ryan Jones played all 90 minutes for the Orange and made five second-half saves to earn his first career shutout.
For Rutgers (5-4-0, 3-2-0), Ibrahim Kamara led the Scarlet Knights' offense with five shots, including two on goal. Klink played the first half between the posts for the Scarlet Knights and made one save. He was relieved by Morgans, who started the second half and finished with three saves in the final 45 minutes.
