SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Elliott Townsend scored for the second straight match, but the Orange couldn't overcome three second-half goals by Villanova and lost a 3-1 decision to the Wildcats on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
All four of the game's goals came in the second half with the Wildcats scoring three times in the span of 13:34 to put the match out of reach. Townsend's goal came at the 81:09 mark and closed the game's scoring. It was his second career goal after he netted his first in the Orange's 3-0 win at Rutgers on Oct. 2.
Syracuse was the more dangerous team at the outset of the match with juniors Geoff Lytle and Manny Sevillano each generating scoring chances in the first 10 minutes. However, Villanova goalkeeper Chris Bresnahan was up to the challenge and denied both attempts, including a diving save on Lytle in the seventh minute.
Syracuse put all three of its shots in the first half on goal, and the Orange defense did its part, surrendering just four shots in the period. None of Villanova's scoring opportunities seriously threatened redshirt freshman keeper Ryan Jones who finished the half with two saves on long-range shots.
The game opened up in the second half as Villanova's Kyle Soroka broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 64th minute when he finished a Matt Margiotta pass after Margiotta carried the ball through the SU backline. The Wildcats extended the lead to 2-0 when Kevin Garcia and Mike Seamon combined for a goal at the 73:04 mark. Less than four minutes later, Sean Mergenthal recorded his first goal of the year to put the Wildcats in front by three at 76:48.
Down three with less than 15 minutes to play, the Orange pressed forward. Townsend snapped the Syracuse scoring drought when he found the top corner of the Villanova frame in the 82nd minute, but it was all the offense the Orange could muster as the Wildcats held on for the victory.
Jones finished with four saves in goal for the Orange. Bresnahan recorded three saves for the Wildcats to earn the victory. He was relieved late in the second half by John Fogarty, who played the final 6:05 between the posts for the visitors.
Syracuse goes in search of its second straight road win when it returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 10. The Orange will face No. 12 Louisville in a BIG EAST Red Division contest at Cardinal Park. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
Match Notes: Sevillano recorded his first career point with an assist on Townsend's goal … Jones went over the 50-save mark for the season against the Wildcats… He now has 53 saves in 10 games … Townsend made his third consecutive start in the match.
