SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 12 USF scored a pair of late goals on its way to a 3-0 win against Syracuse on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Bulls registered scores in the 76th minute and the 81st minute to turn a tightly contested one-goal game into a three-goal victory.
Sebastian Thuriere had a hand in both second-half goals for the Bulls. With USF ahead, 1-0, Thuriere extended the margin to 2-0 with a strike from the top of the box to the top corner of the SU frame at the 75:29 mark. He also assisted on Hasani Sinclair's goal at 80:43 that closed the scoring.
The late tallies masked a competitive game that saw the Orange record six corner kicks to USF's five. Syracuse also outshot the Bulls, 15-9, in the match.
Syracuse successfully defended two USF (9-2-2, 4-2-2) corner kicks in the game's first three minutes and then began attacking the Bulls' defense as senior Hansen Woodruff, junior Manny Sevillano, sophomore Nick Olivetti and senior Elliott Townsend all recorded scoring chances during the next 15 minutes.
However, Syracuse (2-12-0, 1-7-0) could not convert any of its opportunities and Zak Boggs gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when he scored on a free kick after a yellow card was issued to SU redshirt freshman goalie Ryan Jones.
Down by one, the Orange continued to generate offensive chances in the second half and nearly equalized the match 30 seconds into the second period when sophomore #L.J. Papaleo# beat a USF defender along the endline. He sent a cross to Woodruff, whose volley just sailed over the crossbar.
Syracuse continued to attack and possessed the ball for long stretches in USF's third of the field. However as the Orange pressed forward, the Bulls began sending balls deep to their forwards to counter SU's pressure. The strategy paid off as Thuriere and Sinclair scored to clinch the victory.
The Bulls had four players finish with at least two points in the contest. Thuriere led the way with three (1g, 1a). Boggs (1g) and Sinclair (1g) recorded two as did Javed Mohammed, who picked up assists on USF's first two goals. Goalkeeper Jeff Attinella made two saves to earn the shutout.
For Syracuse, Woodruff led the way with five shots. Jones recorded one save in the match between the posts.
The Orange returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 20 when it wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule against Adelphi. Start time is 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Match Notes: Olivetti made his first start of the year for the Orange … The victory was USF's first road win against Syracuse … The Bulls were 0-2 in their two previous matches at the SU Soccer Stadium.
