STORRS, Conn. – The Orange (4-3-3, 1-3-0) and No. 5 Connecticut played a scoreless first half, but the Huskies (9-1-0, 4-1-0) tallied the game’s only goal in the 70th minute to hand SU a 1-0 loss Sunday, Sept. 30 in front of 4,163 fans at Morrone Stadium.
Orange junior goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) faced 24 shots and a made a season-best seven saves, increasing his 2007 total to 45 (4.5 spg). He stopped three shots in the first half as the Orange played one of the nation’s best offensive teams to a 0-0 draw deep into the second half.
The Orange denied every Husky opportunity in the first half, but Connecticut’s offensive pressure proved to be too much for Syracuse in the second stanza. All-American Julius James eventually broke through for the Huskies. He found the back of the net for the first time this year when he flicked a header past Cavicchia at the 69:19 mark. Mike Pezza, the nation’s assists leader, served the ball to James off a restart and he put away the game-winner from 10 yards out.
Sophomore Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) registered SU’s best scoring chance of the afternoon, but his breakaway was denied by the Huskies’ Joe Boa midway through the second period. The Huskies kept the Orange at bay following James’ tally as it pushed forward in hopes of getting the equalizer.
Connecticut’s Josh Ford played all 90 minutes in goal to record his seventh shutout of the season. He and the Huskies have allowed just four goals all year.
It was Connecticut’s seventh win in its last eight games against the Orange.
Syracuse returns to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 7 for a 5:00 p.m. match at BIG EAST Red Division rival Rutgers.
