PISCATAWAY, N.J. – SU sophomore Tom Perevegyencev (Budapest, Hungary) scored his third goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as Rutgers’ Tomislav Barisic notched his first goal of the year with 4:28 left in regulation to lift the Scarlet Knights to a 2-1 victory Sunday, Oct. 7 at Yurcak Field. Chris Moore and Adam Sternberger assisted on Barisic’s game-winner.
Barisic’s shot found the back of the net after Moore’s cross from the right side was tapped to him by Sternberger. It was the only goal of the second half and snapped a 1-1 tie.
The victory improved the Scarlet Knights’ record to 4-6-1 overall and 3-3-0 in the BIG EAST. Syracuse is now 4-4-3 and 1-4-0 in the league.
The match began with a bang as the two teams scored the fastest consecutive goals by opposing teams in Syracuse history. The clubs traded tallies 14 seconds apart in the 29th minute. After a Syracuse turnover in the midfield, Sternberger launched a 30-yard shot that found its target to put the Scarlet Knights in front, 1-0, at 28:08.
The Orange responded off the ensuing kickoff as Perevegyencev lofted a shot over the head of keeper Matt VanOekel at the 28:22 mark. Sophomore Luis Martinez (Morristown, N.J.) ignited the action, playing the ball up to Perevegyencev for the equalizer.
The back-to-back goals eclipsed the previous school record for fastest goals by both teams by one second. In 2003, SU’s Kirk Johnson and St. Bonaventure’s Ryan Mahoney scored 15 seconds apart in the second half of a 2-2 draw.
Perevegyencev’s goal came on SU’s only shot of the first half, but its offense came alive after the intermission. Eight of the Orange’s nine shots in the game were after halftime and only three missed the net, forcing VanOekel to make five saves to keep SU from grabbing the lead.
Junior Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) each had chances to give SU the advantage late, but their attempts in the 72nd and 75th minutes, respectively, were stopped by VanOekel. VanOekel also denied Woodruff on a shot with less than 10 minutes to play, setting the stage for Barisic’s goal.
Orange junior goalie Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made six saves in the contest to creep closer to 200 for his career. He now has 198 stops in 44 career matches.
Junior Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) made his first appearance of the season for Syracuse. Rowley injured his knee in spring practice and missed the Orange’s first 10 games. He played 26 minutes against the Scarlet Knights.
Syracuse returns home on Saturday, Oct. 13 for a 7:00 p.m. match against Cincinnati at the SU Soccer Stadium.
