COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Orange men’s soccer team placed second at the Wolstein Soccer Classic this weekend. Syracuse (1-0-1) battled the host Ohio State Buckeyes (1-0-1) to a 0-0 draw at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 2 in the tournament’s final match to remain unbeaten in 2007. Both squads finished the event with identical records, but Ohio State captured the tournament crown via its win against third-place West Virginia (1-1-0) on Friday. The Orange defeated fourth-place Penn State (0-2-0) in its opening contest.
SU sophomore forward Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.), senior defender Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and junior defender Karol Wasielewski (Gdynia, Poland) were named to the Wolstein Classic All-Tournament Team. Woodruff set a new career high with four points (1g, 2a) in SU’s win against Penn State and recorded one shot against Ohio State Sunday.
Peetoom, the Orange’s captain, registered an assist against the Nittany Lions and led the squad to back-to-back shutouts in his role as central defender.
Wasielewski netted his first career goal against Penn State and teamed with Peetoom on the Orange’s back line to keep both the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes off the scoreboard.
In the championship match, Ohio State dominated the stats, out-shooting SU, 32-5, and holding a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks, but Syracuse hung tough to earn the draw. The Orange fended off 14 shots in the second half, eight in the first overtime and two in the second extra session.
"Defensively we kept two really good teams off the scoreboard this weekend," head coach Dean Foti said. "We are going to be in every game we play if we defend up to the level that we are capable of. To not let in a goal against two high-caliber Big Ten teams, I was pleased."
Tournament MVP Xavier Balc led the Buckeyes with seven shot attempts. Roger Espinoza launched six and all-tournament honoree Eric Brunner recorded five. Still the SU defense refused to break.
Ohio State goalkeeper Casey Latchem played all 110 minutes and made one save. He also earned all-tournament honors.
Offensively, junior forward Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) paced the Orange Sunday with three shots.
SU junior goalkeeper Robert Smith (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) made his second straight start and stopped three shots in 79 minutes and 13 seconds of action between the posts. He was replaced by classmate Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario), who played the rest of the match. Cavicchia made three saves in the final 10 minutes of regulation to help force overtime and made two more in the first extra session to preserve the draw.
The Orange plays in its second regular-season tournament next weekend. Syracuse will meet Seton Hall on Friday, Sept. 7 at 5:00 p.m. and James Madison on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1:00 p.m. at the 2007 Mayor’s Cup in Oneonta.
