ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Orange men’s soccer team (2-0-1) overcame an early one-goal deficit and remained unbeaten with a 2-1 victory against Seton Hall in the opening match of the Mayor’s Cup on Friday, Sept. 7 at Elmore Field. Sophomore forward Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) tallied the game-winner for SU in the 67th minute to hand the Pirates their first loss of the year.
The Orange got another stellar effort from its defense, which held the BIG EAST’s highest scoring team to just one goal. The Pirates entered Friday’s match averaging 4.0 goals per contest. Syracuse has surrendered just one score in 290 minutes during its first three matches.
Seton Hall (2-1-0) jumped on the Orange 39 seconds into game when Eliseo Giusfredi found the back of the net on a free kick to give the Pirates the lead. But the Orange regrouped, and sophomore forward Tom Perevegyencev (Budapest, Hungary) registered the equalizer at 41:30 off a cross by freshman Justin Arena (Potomac, Md.). The assist was the first collegiate point for Arena and the goal gave the Orange a boost heading into halftime.
In the second stanza, Syracuse maintained its momentum and Woodruff broke through for the golden goal at 66:26. It was the second goal of the year for Woodruff and it came off a rebound loose in front of the Seton Hall net. The score was the fifth-game winning goal of his career.
“This was a great win for us,” head coach Dean Foti said after the game. “It was good for our team to be behind and still find a way to come out on top. Seton Hall is a fun team to play because they aren’t afraid to attack and there was some good back and forth between the two teams, which is fun to watch.”
SU junior goalie Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made his first start of the season in Friday’s contest. He stopped six shots, including a penalty kick by Giusfredi in the 86th minute, to preserve the win. It was Cavicchia’s 14th career victory, tying him with Josh McGibbon for seventh on the school’s all-time wins ledger.
The triumph was the first for the Orange against Seton Hall since 1999 and ended the Pirates’ six-match series unbeaten streak.
Giusfredi paced the Pirates’ offense with seven shot attempts. Goalkeeper Paul McHenry made three saves in the loss.
Syracuse will face James Madison for the first time in school history on Sunday, Sept. 9 at Elmore Field. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
