COLUMBUS, Ohio – A pair of players netted their first career goals to lead the Orange to a dominating, 4-0, victory versus Penn State (0-1) in its 2007 season opener in the Wolstein Soccer Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University Friday, Aug. 31. Sophomore Tom Perevegyencev (Budapest, Hungary) scored the first goal of his Orange career in the 43rd minute and junior Karol Wasielewski (Gdynia, Poland) netted a goal in the 68th minute of his first collegiate start to key SU’s win. Syracuse’s four goals was its most since it netted four against Cornell in 2003.
Junior forward Spencer Schomaker (Seattle Wash.) and sophomore forward Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) also had goals for Syracuse. Schomaker’s tally put the Orange in front, 1-0, when he converted a three-on-one breakaway 13:23 into the game. Perevegyencev took a feed from Woodruff and converted the scoring chance to give the Orange a 2-0 margin seven minutes before halftime.
"The goal at the end of the first half was crucial," head coach Dean Foti, who earned his 125th career victory, said of Perevegyencev's score. "To get a goal like that really gave us a boost and set the tone for the rest of the game."
SU continued to apply offensive pressure in the second stanza and Woodruff found the back of the net with an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute to put SU on top, 3-0. Wasielewski’s header at 67:51 closed the scoring.
Woodruff finished the match with four points (1g, 2a), establishing a new career high.
"The front-runners did a good job tonight of creating chances for themselves," Foti added. "When you do that it takes some of the pressure off. We also did a good job of limiting their chances early on."
Junior goalkeeper Robert Smith (Niagara Falls, Ontario) made his first career start in the contest and stopped three shots to earn the first shutout of his career and his second career win.
Sophomore transfer Brien Chamney (Oakville, Ontario) started in his first collegiate match. Redshirt freshman Ryan McCormick (Cranston, R.I.), sophomore transfer Kenny Caceros (Nepean, Ontario) and freshman Justin Arena (Potomac, Md.) each made the first appearances of their careers against the Nittany Lions.
Daniel Martini led the Penn State offense with five shots. Nittany Lions’ netminder Conrad Taylor played all 90 minutes and made five saves.
The matched marked SU’s first against a Big Ten team since it faced Ohio State in 1997, and it was the Orange’s first win against a Big Ten foe since it defeated the Nittany Lions, 2-1, in 1932. The triumph was also Syracuse's third consecutive season-opening victory.
Syracuse will meet the host Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday, Sept. 2 in its final match of the tournament. A live audio stream of the game will be available via Ohio State’s student station at ohiostatesportsradio.blogspot.com
