SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Tom Perevegyencev (Budapest, Hungary) touched off a wild celebration at the SU Soccer Stadium when he scored with 1:38 left in regulation to lift the Orange (5-4-3, 2-4-0) to a 1-0 victory against Cincinnati (5-6-1, 3-2-1) on Saturday, Oct. 13. The win snapped SU’s four-game losing streak and gave the team three crucial points in the race to qualify for the BIG EAST Championship.
Perevegyencev corralled the ball in the far right corner, sprinted past two Cincinnati defenders and fired a shot inside the far post for the game-winner. It was his fourth goal of the season and the first game-winning goal of his career.
“Tom’s a dangerous player,” SU head coach Dean Foti said after the match. “If we can get him the ball in those spots we thought he could make plays and he got a big one tonight.”
The goal sent the SU bench into a frenzy as the team increased its point total to six in the Red Division standings. The top six teams in the league’s Red and Blue divisions make the conference tournament.
Junior keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made five saves to earn his third shutout of the season. Three of his five stops came in the second half, including a diving save on the Bearcats’ Kenny Anaba in the 56th minute to keep the game scoreless.
Cavicchia eclipsed the 200-save plateau for his career with the performance and now has 203 stops. The shutout moved him into sole possession of sixth-place on the Orange’s all-time list with 13 career blankings.
For Syracuse, Perevegyencev’s goal capped a match in which it was able to generate several good offensive chances. Junior Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) nearly got the Orange on the board on its first shot of the match, but Cincinnati’s Miguel Rosales made a diving save on his attempt in the ninth minute. Perevegyencev also had a good offensive chance in the opening period, but his volley off a cross in the 28th minute just nicked the crossbar and sailed over the net.
In the second half, sophomore Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) kept the pressure on, hitting the crossbar in the 71st minute. The rebound came straight down in the Bearcats’ goal mouth, but squirted away.
The Orange’s tenacity throughout the match was rewarded when Perevegyencev finished off its last quality scoring opportunity to produce the victory.
Anaba and Patrick Baxter led Cincinnati with four shots each, and Rosales made four saves in goal.
With the victory, the Orange improved 2-1 all-time against the Bearcats.
Syracuse will play a non-conference match at Hartwick on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is 7:00 p.m.
