SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The SU men’s soccer team lost its regular-season home finale Wednesday, Oct. 31 by the score of 3-1 to St. John’s. While things didn’t go as planned for the Orange, there was a festive atmosphere at the SU Soccer Stadium as Syracuse took the field in front of a live television audience for the first time courtesy of ESPNU. The fourth-largest crowd in the history of the facility was also on hand as 1,049 fans streamed into the stadium for the match.
“The atmosphere was great tonight,” SU head coach Dean Foti said. “It’s great to play on that kind of a national stage.”
Junior Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario) got SU on the board first Wednesday when bent a free kick into the top left corner of the St. John’s goal at the 26:04 mark of the first half. It was his fourth of the year and his first since he scored twice against Fordham in SU’s home opener.
Trailing by a goal, the Red Storm (9-5-4, 6-2-2) caught a break when Joel Gustaffson’s free kick was deflected into the SU net by Orange defender Brien Chamney (Oakville, Ontario). Chamney was going up to clear the ball out of the box, but instead he headed it into his own goal, tying the match in the 38th minute.
St. John’s seized the momentum after that and two goals in the second half by Omar Alfonso put the game out of reach. Alfonso’s first tally came 4:06 into the second stanza. His second score was in 67th minute and provided the final margin.
“They had an own goal, but there was still a lot of soccer left to be played,” Foti said. “We needed to do a better job keeping our defensive shape.”
The loss eliminates the Orange (6-7-4, 3-7-0) from BIG EAST Tournament contention. The championship’s final berth will be decided on Nov. 3 when Rutgers takes on Cincinnati.
SU junior keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made five saves for the ninth time this year to elevate his season total to 70. The Red Storm’s Neal Kitson finished with two saves to record the win.
The game was the final home mach in the careers of SU senior defenders Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, British Columbia), Aaron Bonser (Fairport, N.Y.) and James Goodwin (Merrimack, N.H.). All three have played more than 50 career games along the backline.
Syracuse plays its season finale on Saturday, Nov. 3 at DePaul. Kickoff is 2:00 p.m. EST at Wish Field.
