CHICAGO, Ill. – The Orange men’s soccer team lost a 1-0 decision to Red Division rival DePaul in its season finale on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Wish Field. The Blue Demons’Alex Mangan snapped a 0-0 tie, scoring with 28 seconds left in the second overtime.
The Orange finishes the season with a 6-8-4 overall record and a 3-8-0 mark in the BIG EAST. DePaul improves to 11-6-0 overall and 7-4-0 in the league heading into the BIG EAST Championship. The Blue Demons clinched a first-round bye in the tournament, which gets underway on Nov. 7.
Mangan’s golden goal came at 109:32. His header off a pass from Julian Chille glanced of the right post past SU junior keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario). It was Mangan’s eighth goal of the year.
Sophomore midfielder Luis Martinez (Morristown, N.J.) led the Orange offense with four shots, three of which were on goal. Martinez registered the only shot of the first overtime. It was stopped by DePaul goalie Brian Visser.
Visser made another save on an SU chance in the second overtime, this time on senior defender Aaron Bonser (Fairport, N.Y.), setting the stage for Mangan’s game-winner.
Cavicchia made four saves against the Blue Demons to finish the year with 74 stops. Three of his saves came in the first period to keep the match scoreless.
Visser made five saves to earn the shutout.
Saturday’s match was the last for Bonser as well as fellow senior defender Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, British Columbia). Both players started and played the entire game. Peetoom finishes his career as one of the most accomplished defenders in school history. The three-time team Defensive MVP started all 67 matches of his career. Bonser earned starting nods 47 times during his Orange tenure.
Syracuse finished with 21 goals in 2007, its highest total since 2002. Sophomore Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) had nearly half of them (10). Woodruff ended the campaign with 24 points, the best offensive season for an SU player since 2001.
