WASHINGTON, D.C. – The SU men’s soccer team (3-1-0, 0-1-0) lost for the first time in 2006 by the score of 1-0 in double overtime to Georgetown (2-3-0, 1-0-0) on Friday, Sept. 8 at North Kehoe Field. The match was the BIG EAST opener for both schools, and the defeat ended SU’s three-game winning streak.
The Hoyas’ Richard Frank scored with 5:25 to play in the second extra session to produce winning margin. Frank gathered a pass from Mike Glaccum in the SU end of the field and ripped a shot from 24 yards out that beat Orange sophomore goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) to lower left side for the golden goal.
“We played well in the first half,” Orange head coach Dean Foti said. “We had some looks at the goal and didn’t capitalize. At the end of the game we gave the ball away and Frank got a good look and ended the game.”
It was SU’s first overtime loss since Oct. 10, 2004 at Notre Dame, ending SU’s seven-game overtime unbeaten streak.
Cavicchia faced 21 shots and made four saves on the day to increase his career total to 88. Senior captain Richard Asante (North York, Ontario) and sophomore Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) led the Orange offensive attack with three shots each.
Georgetown keeper Joe Devine made two stops in net for the Hoyas to record the shutout.
The Hoyas owned a 21-13 advantage in shots in the contest and generated nine corner kicks to SU’s five.
Syracuse will be in action again on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 2:00 p.m. when it meets Blue Division rival Seton Hall at The New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Lubetkin Field in Newark, N.J.
