NEWARK, N.J. – The SU men’s soccer team (3-2-0, 0-2-0) lost its second straight conference game on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2-1, against Seton Hall (4-2-0, 2-0-0) at Lubetkin Field on the campus of The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). Senior captain Richard Asante (North York, Ontario) scored his first goal of the season for SU, but the Orange couldn’t overcome a 2-0, second-half deficit.
The Pirates got on the scoreboard early as Eliseo Giusfredi netted an unassisted goal when he scored on a volley off a Pirates’ free kick at the 15:21 mark to put the Pirates in front, 1-0.
In the second half, Seton Hall pushed its margin to two on an unassisted goal by Jon Lewandowski, his first of the year, at 74:40. Just over two minutes later, Asante cut the Pirates’ lead to 2-1 when he found the back of the net, bicycle-kicking a cross by Seton Hall keeper Ian Joyce at 76:48. Sophomore Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) and junior James Goodwin (Merrimack, N.H.) each recorded their first assists of the season on the play.
SU controlled the pace of play and nearly equalized with five minutes left when Asante got open for a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. His volley was tipped high and off the cross bar by Joyce and the rebound went clear to preserve Seton Hall’s fourth straight win.
Sixteen players saw action at Seton Hall and 17 members of the SU roster played against Georgetown on Sept. 8, something head coach Dean Foti feels is a good sign.
“The team played very well,” Foti said following the Seton Hall match. “We had chances. We just didn’t capitalize on them. I liked that we were able to play a lot of players in the two matches this weekend. We have the depth this year to stay with these good teams. Now it’s just a matter of making a play. We were a little unlucky today.”
SU sophomore Robert Cavicchia played all 90 minutes for the Orange in net and made four saves. Joyce finished with seven stops, including three in the second half, for the Pirates.
The Orange held a slight edge in shots, 15-14, and each team registered two corner kicks.
Sunday’s game was moved to NJIT due to ongoing upgrades to Owen T. Carroll Field.
The Orange returns home on Thursday, Sept. 14. Syracuse will host Providence in a divisional cross-over match at the SU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. and admission is free.
